A Glimpse of History on the Westside
May 16, 2013
Rich in History
In Vancouver’s Westside, majestic leafy canopies arch from aged trees, their branches stretch over roadways that have seen Vancouver from infancy to present day. Historic homes characterize these quiet streets—named after Westcoast trees—and a sense of peaceful community pervades. You wonder what these streets were like over a century ago, when these now-wizened trunks were mere saplings, and when Vancouver was just beginning its ascent into a world-class city. It was in 1887 during Vancouver’s “golden age”, that Canadian Pacific Railways land commissioner L.A. Hamilton gave Oak Street, and all of the Westside’s tree-themed streets their names, establishing the Westside as we know it today.
